Hibernate (JPA) & Spring Boot for IT Student ( BCA Semester 3 Advance Java : Unit 5)

Welcome to Unit 5: Hibernate (JPA) & Spring Boot

Welcome to Unit 5 of Jakarta EE & Web Architecture, where we move from traditional Java web development toward modern enterprise application development using Hibernate, JPA, Spring Framework, and Spring Boot.

This unit introduces students to the concepts and technologies used to develop database-driven, scalable, and modern Java applications. The topics are explained in a simple, practical, and structured manner, helping students understand how Java applications can interact with databases and expose functionality through modern REST APIs.

The first part of this unit focuses on Hibernate and JPA (Jakarta Persistence API). You will learn the fundamentals of Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) and understand how Java objects can be mapped to relational database tables. The unit covers JPA architecture, Hibernate architecture, annotation-based configuration, entity mapping, CRUD operations, and JPQL (Java Persistence Query Language).

The second part introduces the Spring Framework and Spring Boot, which have become important technologies for developing modern Java enterprise and web applications. You will learn the fundamentals of Dependency Injection, Spring MVC architecture, and how to create a Spring Boot project using Maven.

You will also learn how to build RESTful APIs, connect Spring Boot applications with databases using JPA, and understand the basic concepts of Microservices Architecture. Practical examples will help students understand how these technologies work together to build real-world applications.

📚 In this Unit, You will Learn:

🔹 Hibernate / JPA

  • 🔹 Introduction to ORM (Object-Relational Mapping)

  • 🔹 Advantages and Applications of ORM

  • 🔹 JPA Overview

  • 🔹 JPA Architecture

  • 🔹 Hibernate Architecture

  • 🔹 Hibernate as a JPA Implementation

  • 🔹 Configuration using Annotations

  • 🔹 Entity Classes and Entity Mapping

  • 🔹 Mapping Java Objects with Database Tables

  • 🔹 CRUD Operations using Hibernate/JPA

  • 🔹 Persisting and Retrieving Data

  • 🔹 Updating and Deleting Entities

  • 🔹 JPQL (Java Persistence Query Language)

  • 🔹 Database Interaction using JPA

🔹 Spring Boot

  • 🔹 Introduction to Spring Framework

  • 🔹 Spring Core Concepts

  • 🔹 Spring Boot Overview

  • 🔹 Features and Advantages of Spring Boot

  • 🔹 Dependency Injection

  • 🔹 Inversion of Control (IoC)

  • 🔹 Spring MVC Architecture

  • 🔹 Creating a Spring Boot Project using Maven

  • 🔹 Project Structure and Configuration

  • 🔹 Building REST APIs

  • 🔹 Handling HTTP Requests and Responses

  • 🔹 Connecting Spring Boot with Database using JPA

  • 🔹 Performing Database CRUD Operations

  • 🔹 Introduction to Microservices Architecture

Throughout this unit, students will understand how Hibernate/JPA simplifies database interaction and how Spring Boot simplifies the development of modern Java applications and RESTful services.

By the end of this unit, students will be able to understand ORM and JPA concepts, create entity mappings, perform CRUD operations using Hibernate/JPA, write JPQL queries, create Spring Boot applications using Maven, implement REST APIs, connect applications with databases, and understand the fundamentals of microservices.

This unit brings together the knowledge gained from Maven, JDBC, Servlets, and JSP and provides a pathway toward modern Java enterprise development using Spring Boot, REST APIs, JPA, and Microservices.
